I think we'll see more effort in Xbox emulation as more and more original consoles fail, though. What it boils down to is this: why go through all the pain and trouble of coding, testing, and debugging an emulator when you can play most of these games on PC, PS2, or GameCube? This has been discussed before over on the /r/emulation subreddit, here and here among other times, and that first statement is from someone who is actually trying to develop an Xbox emulator.

It wasn't a big seller compared with the PS2 and PC games, and it didn't have very many true exclusives. I think there are two main problems the Xbox platform itself had that keep it from being an attractive target for an emulator project. Why isn't there a good Xbox emulator? Is it because the system is "too difficult"? Or just the right person hasn't come along and been interested enough to do it? But I'm just genuinely curious about this. I'm not a programmer, and I realize that coding an emulator is not easy. There's PCSX2 which is getting to be fullspeed on modern hardware, I even checked and Dolphin emulator claims "Most games run perfectly or with minor bugs", for Gamecube -and- Wii! I guess my expectations are too high, but I just can't figure out why this system isn't emulated better. So it appears that in 2016, there are still only a couple of Xbox emulators, and the "best one" only plays 1 game? But certainly someone will be developing an emulator? OK, I figure it must not be as easy as that. More years go by, and still no "PC Patch" to play Xbox games. Suffice to say I was underwhelmed by Halo and even frustrated by the repetitive nature of it. The same year that seminal classics like Far Cry and Half Life 2 came out.

OK, surely within a year or two, somebody will figure out how to patch these games to run on PC, since the architecture is so similar.įinally Halo came out for PC in September 2003. Xbox was originally rumored to be "Really similar to a PC", indeed using a standard Pentium 3 processor. Then suddenly Microsoft announces this thing called Xbox, and suddenly Halo is an Xbox exclusive. Back about 16 years ago, I remember a friend and I hearing about this new game in development for Windows and Mac, a modern first person shooter where you could drive vehicles and stuff.
